Heather Lewis, Biography -

After several years of frustration as a single mother of three children I began to evaluate my situation and realized that it was true…I was a statistic. The forecasted outcome for children of divorced parents was me: higher risk of truancy, early sexual encounters, drug and alcohol use, and ultimately pregnancy. Fortunately I had a support system that reprimanded me when I needed it, hugged me when I needed a hug, babysat when I needed a sitter, offered advice when I was in doubt, and just listened when I needed to talk.

With the aim of providing a support system and the means to develop self-knowledge and self-esteem I have created a curricula that teaches life skills in a very interactive and cooperative manner to teens at risk. I have also written and published two workbooks to accompany the curricula as well as a monetary incentive program exclusive to Reality Speaking. I have presented at several conferences since Reality Speaking’s conception two years ago, a few being Penn State’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention conference in October 2003, seventh biennial Tri-State Consortium “Crossing the Great Divide; Fostering Educational Excellence” in April 2003, and Reach One Teach One at Montgomery County Community College in May 2002. I have given workshops at several universities and organizations throughout Montgomery County: Desales University, Temple University, Montgomery County Community College and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Montgomery County.

Vision statement for Reality Speaking

Reality Speaking seeks to become a staple resource for schools and families to assist their students and children in making the best possible choices for their academic and personal futures. Reality Speaking seeks to provide a rooming house for teen mothers and their children who have been displaced from their homes for whatever reason. The home will help establish a secure and supportive home for both mother and child to encourage continued education, employment and good parenting. In addition, Reality Speaking aims to offer an awards scholarship for creative and artistic talent contributed to the enhancement of the Reality Speaking workbooks by its participants. Reality Speaking aspires to become a national and global force in its efforts to educate and prepare all youth for their futures as well as collaborating with other organizations through literature, art and public speaking forums.
